The New Horizons

Hello everyone. This is the Hareruya Media Team.

Today, I’d like to share with you a card preview from the latest expansion, Modern Horizons 2, scheduled to be released on June 18th! We’ve already received some great information from the official release, including the inclusion of Counterspell, which is sure to make old fans hyped, and the fetch lands in enemy colors, which will be great for players just starting out in Modern.

Modern Horizons2

Before we get to the details. Let’s first review the previous installment, “Modern Horizons”.

Modern Horizons

Force of NegationSeasoned PyromancerCollector OuphePlague Engineer

Modern Horizons is a special set for the Modern format that was released in June 2019. It contains cards that change the existing archetypes and deck compatibility, such as 《Force of Negation》, the《Force of Will》 that appeared in the Modern environment, and 《Seasoned Pyromancer》, a lubricant for aggro decks. There is also a wide range of countermeasure cards such as the 《Null Rod》 on a stick, 《Collector Ouphe》, which is searchable and easy to use, so it has found a place in many decks.

Hogaak, Arisen NecropolisWrenn and Six

I remember that among the powerful cards, the multi-colored design stood out in particular. With the appearance of 《Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis》, the graveyard deck became so fast that it could produce an 8/8 trample on the second turn, and it was so rampant that it became known as the “Hogaak Summer”.

《Wrenn and Six》 was used in midrange and control as a source of advantage because it could collect lands while punishing creatures with toughness 1. In Legacy, you can use 《Wasteland》 in addition to fetchlands, so depending on the situation, there were times when you couldn’t run more than two lands, which was disastrous.

After a brief burst of flashy play in Modern, what remained after some cards left the environment were cards that solidified the foothold of fair decks.

Ice-Fang Coatl

The same goes for the 《Ice-Fang Coatl》. For only two mana, this creature has four abilities: Flash, Flying, a cantrip, and conditional death touch. Even if you don’t meet the requirements, you’ll still get an extra permanent for free. If you get deathtouch, it becomes a pseudo-removal, allowing you to ignore the size of your opponent’s creatures without reducing your hand. It is not wasted in the early game, or even anytime you draw it.

Looking at the card again, “《Ice-Fang Coatl》” is a really good card. It has a constant effect no matter what the situation is, so it’s not wasted, and its ability to flash in makes it easy for combo opponents. Since it’s a creature, it can be searched and used around, and synergies can be easily formed, making it a versatile creature.

So this is the card that Hareruya will be introducing!

When 《Ice-Fang Coatl》 enters the battlefield, draw a card.

《Ice-Fang Coatl》 has deathtouch as long as you control at least three other snow permanents.

The retro frame version of 《Ice-Fang Coatl》!

Yes, that’s right. The 《Ice-Fang Coatl》 will be back in the retro frame!

The illustration of 《Ice-Fang Coatl》 framed in a deep gold frame looks nice. The normal version looks great, but I think you should check out the Foil version, which has even more depth and brilliance.

Uro, Titan of Nature's WrathField of the Dead

As I said earlier, 《Ice-Fang Coatl》 has great specs as a lubricant in the deck, but I’m wondering if it has a place for 《Ice-Fang Coatl》. It used to be used together with 《Uro, Titan of Nature’s Wrath》 in the same Simic colors, to support the early game as a defense until 《Field of the Dead》 became active.

AlurenFood Chain

Due to the recent banning, I have seen less of it in Modern, but it is still active in Legacy. It has found its place in combo decks like 《Aluren》 and 《Food Chain》. In combo decks that require multiple cards, it makes sense to be able to defend while digging through the deck. Whether it’s 《Delver of Secrets》 or a giant creature that has been Reanimated, 《Ice-Fang Coatl》 is a reliable stopgap.

How to Get a Hold of It

As for how to get them, the cards from the previous Modern Horizons are only included in Collector Boosters. In other words, you can’t get them from Draft Boosters or Set Boosters. Please be careful when buying booster packs if you are looking to crack a 《Ice-Fang Coatl》.

Can’t Wait for Modern Horizons 2

In this article, I introduced 《Ice-Fang Coatl》, which will be included again in Modern Horizons 2. It has a lot of advantages, such as being a lubricant for your deck, pseudo-removal for your opponent’s creatures… but above all, I’m attracted to the retro frame.

Last but not least, massive thanks to Wizard of the Coast, we were able to bring you the cool looking retro frame 《Ice-Fang Coatl》that will be included in the Collector Booster of Modern Horizons 2!
