Will Jumpstart Shake Historic Again?

Sebastian Pozzo

Introduction

Hello everyone. Today I will be covering the Historic format. Analyzing the recent results and looking for New Historic Horizons with the upcoming Jumpstart cards.

The Current Historic Metagame

Brainstorm

Let’s start with the most important tournament that we had after the ban of 《Brainstorm》. Coming into this event, Jeskai Control was the deck to beat.

Even though the deck used to play 《Brainstorm》, it’s ban didn’t affect the deck much, because where 《Brainstorm》 was better was in combo decks where you want to find specific cards and get rid of repeated combo pieces (Izzet Creativity) or in decks that want to get rid of extra lands and find more action (Izzet Phoenix).

In Jeskai Control every resource is usually useful and you also tend to want as much mana as you can. The ultimate proof of this is when Seth Manfield top 8 the Strixheaven Championship playing only 3 copies of 《Brainstorm》 in Jeskai to put a total of 31 in the top8.

Let’s see the numbers of the Challengers Gauntlet then:

The information provided from MTG Data is always key to analyze metagames and their evolution, if you aren’t following them I strongly recommend you to do so!

This time the numbers themselves shouldn’t be taken seriously because of the very low sample size, however, in one chart we can pretty much see how the tournament went for each deck.

Dreadhorde ArcanistKorvold, Fae-Cursed KingTeferi, Hero of Dominaria

As we can see the Jeskai decks were the most popular, and from the decks with more than one representant in the tournament, the clear winners were Rakdos Arcanist (beating Jeskai), Jund Food (beating everything else and being even vs Jeskai), and Jeskai Control (having an edge over the Jeskai with 《Magma Opus》).

As for the future, I don’t think it will be an all Jeskai boring metagame because it’s a deck that can be fought by a variety of strategies. All Rakdos, Auras, Jund, and Mono Black can present a good fight versus the Jeskai decks (especially if they want to be well-positioned for the mirror). So I don’t expect the Jeskai metagame share to be higher than 25% in the upcoming events.

Jumpstart: Historic Horizons

Elves

Now let’s dive into Jumpstart! At first glance, the card that caught my attention the most is 《Freyalise, Skyshroud Partisan》. The other Jumpstart was all about Goblins with 《Muxus, Goblin Grandee》 and its friends, now it might be the time for the elves to shine.

First of all, if you aren’t familiar with these new cards, notice that they will only be available in Magic Arena as they offer effects that can’t be easily reproduced with paper Magic.

Perpetually is similar to getting a counter (only that you can have it in your and too), Seek means that you get a random card of that characteristic from your deck into your hand, and Conjure is creating a specific card (not a token, as it can be returned to your hand or shuffled in your deck).

With all that said the power level of 《Freyalise》 seems super high to me and not only that, it also covers 2 weaknesses the elf deck had (fragility to sweepers, flooding without action or not much pressure after your lord is killed).

Elvish Visionary

Jumpstart also offers us the possibility to add 《Skyshroud Lookout》 but I think that 《Elvish Visionary》 is just better because you want to keep the land count low and sometimes you need to draw one, and mostly because you also will want to draw 《Freyalise》 and 《Collected Company》 a lot. Maybe it could be used as the 5th+ 《Elvish Visionary》.

The deck could also use a splash of black for 《Abomination of Llanowar》 and 《Thoughtseize》, white for 《Rest in Peace》 and 《Yasharn, Implacable Earth》, blue for some countermagic, but as for now I’d try it like this maxing out on 《Castle Garenbrig》.

Merfolks

Another tribe that gets good stuff is Merfolks!

Master of the Pearl TridentSvyelun of Sea and Sky

More Lords and a very strong 3-drop!

And also this Solid 1-drop that helps us with mana screw or color screw while being quite aggressive.

I added 4 《Memory Lapse》 as disruption for that turn before we attack for lethal. It’s possible that a split with some 《Spell Pierce》 or other types of interaction would be better.

Archmage's CharmSeasoned Pyromancer

Other cards that stand out a lot from Jumpstart are 《Archmage’s Charm》 and 《Seasoned Pyromancer》. It’s going to be interesting to see if the control decks will be willing to give up on a color (probably red) to be able to cast 《Archmage’s Charm》 consistently and if the Rakdos Arcanists are willing to lose it’s companion 《Lurrus of the Dream-Den》 in order to count with the very powerful 《Seasoned Pyromancer》.

Izzet Phoenix

Dragon's Rage Channeler

Finally, I’m looking forward to see if 《Dragon’s Rage Channeler》 is able to bring Izzet Phoenix back from its ashes, but I think it will also take 《Consider》 from the new Innistrad set.

I have high hopes for 《Dragon’s Rage Channeler》 being good in Phoenix because the deck lacked a good turn one play. Ideally, you want at least some enchantment, artifact or planeswalker to fasten delirium, but I think the deck can easily trash land-creature-instant-sorcery with 《Dragon’s Rage Channeler》 in play and all the cantrips and 《Faithless Looting》.

That’s all for today my friends, surely Jumpstart will bring a lot more to the Historic tables but this is what caught my attention the most, I hope you’ve enjoyed and please leave a comment with the card you are excited the most from this new set.
