March of the Machine Preview!
The new set March of the Machine will be released on April 21st!
Today, we have received a preview card to share to you all from Wizards of the Coast!
Who Stands up at Alara
Alara known to many from Shards of Alara Block also appears to be in danger.
Alara, which was a plane rich in mana of color, is now split into five shards: Bant, Esper, Grixis, Jund, and Naya. Each of the five shards centered around the three allies’ colors, and we still use this term to indicate the three allies’ colors to this day.
Though hope still remains for the people of Alara. Standing up against the Phyrexians is… 《Knight-Errant of Eos》!
《Knight-Errant of Eos》 (4)
Creature – Human KnightConvoke(Your creatures can help cast this spell. Each creature you tap while casting this spell pays for or one mana of that creature’s color.)
When Knight-Errant of Eos enters the battlefield, look at the top six cards of your library. You may reveal up to two creature cards with mana value X or less from among them where X is the number of creatures that convoked Knight-Errant of Eos. Put the revealed cards into your hand, then shuffle.
4/4
Is this the 《Ranger of Eos》 with Convoke added on?! Let’s take a look at what it does.
Convoke
Convoke
For each colored mana in this spell’s total cost, you may tap an untapped creature of that color you control rather than pay that mana. For each generic mana in this spell’s total cost, you may tap an untapped creature you control rather than pay that mana.
When you cast 《Knight-Errant of Eos》, you can tap any of your creatures as if they were mana creatures.
For example, let’s say you have an 《Knight-Errant of Eos》 in your hand and the three creatures are on the board. By tapping these three, you can pay as if you had three mana.
The colorless creature 《Yotian Frontliner》 can be used to pay , 《Thalia, Guardian of Thraben》 to pay or , and 《Dennick, Pious Apprentice》 can be used to pay , or of your choice.
The creature you tap with Convoke can also be under summoning sickness. In other words, if you can generate 5 mana and you have a 《Recruitment Officer》 in your hand, you can play 2 actions by playing 《Recruitment Officer》 on the battlefield and then tap 《Recruitment Officer》 using Convoke to pay for mana.
Ranger
When Knight-Errant of Eos enters the battlefield, look at the top six cards of your library. You may reveal up to two creature cards with mana value X or less from among them where X is the number of creatures that convoked Knight-Errant of Eos. Put the revealed cards into your hand, then shuffle.
The ability to add following creatures from the library to your hand, reminiscent of 《Ranger of Eos》.
You can add creatures to your hand with a total mana X or less than the number of creatures you tapped to cast. If you tap three creatures, you can gain two creatures with three mana or less from the six cards from your library.
If you tapped five creatures to Convoke, you can bring one or two creature(s) with five mana or less into your hand. If you have another 《Knight-Errant of Eos》 in the top six cards of your library, you are also able to add this to your hand.
How To Use 《Knight-Errant of Eos》
《Knight-Errant of Eos》 has an ability reminiscent of 《Ranger of Eos》. So, let’s see how 《Ranger of Eos》 fared in past Standard.
The deck Andre Coimbra, winner of the World Championships 2009, chose to play is White-Red-Green Beatdown, also known as Naya Lightsaber.
The Exalted ability of 《Noble Hierarch》 supports the beatdown with 《Wild Nacatl》 a powerful one mana creature. 《Noble Hierarch》 leads to 《Ranger of Eos》, which can search for 《Wild Nacatl》 and another 《Noble Hierarch》.
While each card is powerful, their abilities work well together. This powerful beatdown was joined by 《Lightning Bolt》, 《Path to Exile》, and 《Bloodbraid Elf》.
Let’s take another look again at the new card, 《Knight-Errant of Eos》.
The risk of missing a card has been created by the change to “look at the top six cards of your library ” instead of “search from the library” but if you are constructing your deck with this in mind, you should rarely find a card that you cannot add to your hand. (You may be despairing when you see only lands on the top cards, but that’s much better than having to keep drawing lands for the next six turns!)
In recent years, midrange decks have always been considered in Standard. Many analyzed that this is because there are many powerful cards in the 3-4 mana range in the current Standard.
Assuming that 《Ranger of Eos》 could be legal in Standard, the action of adding two 1 mana creatures to your hand when you can generate 4 mana could give you a card advantage by itself, but by that time, the 1 mana creatures may no longer be useful…, which is the current Standard.
《Knight-Errant of Eos》 is truly 《Ranger of Eos》 that has evolved with the times.
If you can grab two powerful creatures that also serve as removal, such as 《Loran of the Third Path》 or 《Brutal Cathar》, you can remove creatures while deploying your next turn and push the four damage by 《Knight-Errant of Eos》.
Wait a minute, there is a deck that values 1 mana creatures even after midgame.
Who guessed it, it’s Selesnya Toxic.
Their goal is to poison your opponent with Toxic creatures.
In a board where the damage of the Mite token does not go through, this can be used effectively by putting the Mite at the cost for Convoke.
The deck has a low curve and goes wide, yet it hardly runs out of gas after the mid-game, but with 《Knight-Errant of Eos》, this deck may become tougher in grinding games.
《Knight-Errant of Eos》 not only has Convoke, but is a single color creature, easy to cast. You may see this card in various decks involving white.
