Are you ready for the journey surrounding the ring?

‘ You say the ring is dangerous, far more dangerous than I guess. In what way?’

‘In many ways,’ answered the wizard. ‘It is far more powerful than I ever dared to think at first, so powerful that in the end it would utterly overcome anyone of mortal race who possessed it. It would possess him.’

Now, the journey begins to with the ring that has the power to destroy the world.

While escaping from the hands of the Ringwraith and the Orcs under 《Sauron, the Dark Lord》, who are searching for the 《The One Ring》, they head to the 《Mount Doom》 with the ring to throw into the lava, the only way to destroy.

Obviously, it’s a grueling journey. If you were to embark on a journey to dump the 《The One Ring》 into the 《Mount Doom》, what would you bring along with you?

Equipments in the Magic Universe

Let’s see… equipment that can give your creatures indestructibility or protection from your opponent’s spells! There are some equipments in the world of Magic that is just the right thing to tag along for a tough and rough journey.

Today, we have received an equipment as a preview card to share to you all from Wizards of the Coast!

Let me introduce you to the equipment worn by Frodo, the main character in “The Lord of the Rings”!

《Mithril Coat》

‘Mithril! All folk desired it. It could be beaten like copper, and polished like glass; and the Dwarves could make of it a metal, light and yet harder than tempered steel. But its worth was greater than the value of the whole Shire and everything in it.’

Mithril is an incredibly precious metal in the world of “The Lord of the Rings”. The main character Frodo receives the 《Mithril Coat》 from his father-in-law Bilbo. Bilbo too, has been on a grueling journey in “The Hobbit”. 《Mithril Coat》 is a piece of equipment that has saved its owner from the jaws of death multiple times!

The Shire where Frodo and his fellows live.

Diving under Aragorn’s blow with the speed of a striking snake he charged into the Company and thrust with his spear straight at Frodo. The blow caught him on the right side, and Frodo was hurled against the wall and pinned.

Orcs in the Magic Universe

Frodo is hit by a powerful spear thrust from an orc. His fellows all feared Frodo was killed, but he survived the attack. The attack was so severe that he could have died but Frodo, who was wearing the 《Mithril Coat》 was only bruised! How amazing!

After this incident, you will see Frodo wearing the 《Mithril Coat》 on throughout the story. With this Coat, there’s nothing to be afraid of!

Using It In Our Games

So let’s consider 《Mithril Coat》 usage in our games.

Indestructible

When Mithril Coat enters the battlefield, attach it to target legendary creature you control.

Equipped creature has indestructible.

Equip

The cards included in The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth can be used in Modern and lower formats. However, the main battlefield for this card should be Commander!

Commander is a game played with a legendary creature as the commander of the deck. Legendary creatures such as 《Frodo Baggins》 and 《Gollum, Patient Plotter》, can be cast at any time as if they were in your hand, when they are placed separately from the deck.

The card chosen as the commander can be cast again even if it is removed, but the +1/+1 counters, etc. on it will be removed, and you will have to wait for the summoning sickness before you can attack. Best way to play is to be able to protect your commander!

This is where 《Mithril Coat》 comes in play!

Creatures with “indestructible” are literally indestructible. If your opponent is trying to kill 《Frodo Baggins》 you can quickly cast 《Mithril Coat》! It will save Frodo from a removal.

Your opponents must first have to deal with 《Mithril Coat》, which itself is indestructible also! It cannot be destroyed by 《Abrade》 and 《Force of Vigor》!

Similar cards have appeared in the past. 《Darksteel Plate》 is an equipment that is indestructible and gives indestructible to the equipped creature. Basically, you had to cast it and equip it on your turn, so equipments had a weakness to removal while equipping to your creature.

On the other hand, 《Mithril Coat》 has flash. When your opponent targets a removal at your creature, equipping 《Mithril Coat》 to your targeted creature will waste a removal from your opponent. 《Darksteel Plate》 was a card that was only considered in a hand full of decks, but 《Mithril Coat》 may be seen if your commander is a system creature, or a high damage voltron style commander.

Outlook

With including the one and only version of 《The One Ring》, and a special version of 《Sol Ring》 featuring the ring of power, The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth is a set with specialty cards and lots of flavor which is going to be an exciting set not only for Magic fans, but also for fans of “The Lord of the Rings”!
