Going into the 2019 Magic World Championship from streaming
What we should talk about Piotr Glogowski must be about him playing in the professional Magic scenes, but just talking about that leaves a lot behind. He not only represents the MPL player Piotr Glogowski, but the Piotr Glogowski that sees one side rivalry against Andrea Mengucci, Kanister that takes music requests from stream watchers and hums, and the combo and emote loving Kaniki.
As you know, his past results have been good. Starting with the Top8 in Pro Tour Ixalan, he has ended in good ranks many times like the second place in 2017 World Magic Cup. He has become a member of the MPL this season, and got second place in the first big event using MTG Arena, the Mythic Invitational. He didn’t lose a single match his way to his trophy of 2019 Mythic Championship VII.
He is going to login to 2019 Magic World Championship as the winner of 2019 Mythic Championship VII, Kanister: The Emotive Champion.
《Kanister, Combo Player》
――You’re getting great results in both digital and real-life Magic. I want to say that the decks you selected are great. What’s important for a deck that you use?
“An ideal competitive Magic player should be able to use any type of deck, remove prejudice to decide which deck is good or not, and choose the best deck. However, I’m not one that’s in this category.”
“There are decks that I’m specially attracted, and decks that I basically don’t want to use in tournaments. In conclusion, it depends on my taste.”
“I can use complicated combo decks that I love better than average professional players, and that’s lucky. When these types of decks fit the meta, it’s not just good as a choice, but it isn’t easy to handle. Those decks require time to understand, but you get advantage as much time as you used on it.”
《Opt》
――It is really difficult to determine the power of a deck. What points can we look at to judge a deck, not just through using it?
“I test mainly on online, using both MO and MTG Arena. It’s very rare for me to playtest intensively with teammates. When you do that, you can try to track your winrates against the meta decks, but you always need to take that with a grain of salt.”
――What does it mean?
“If you are a MPL player and your win rate on playtest was 50%, it doesn’t mean you can keep that win rate in competitive level events. The matchups that you didn’t do well in playtests are horrible. In some matchups there would be surprising things that opponents do in play and it leads to misses. In short, if you make good win rates in matchups that aren’t really that good in playtests because you are a better player than your teammate, you pay your cost in the big tournaments.”
《Meditation Puzzle》
――Representative decks that you use are decks that have synergy between several cards and have complicated moves, like Ironworks, Jund Sacrifice, Amulet and Lantern. Is there any way to master these complicated moves other than a lot of hard practice?
“Like I said before, practicing is almost everything. This practice doesn’t just mean to win or checking how games go in certain matchups.”
“Practicing how much mana you can produce from 《Krark-Clan Ironworks》 and finding out how you can trigger 《Mayhem Devil》 the maximum times is like a puzzle and fun for me. There are many patterns to this, and there are some patterns you meet in real games. If you have them inputted in mind, you can use your mind to think about other things in the games like the board circumstances, and you get to concentrate on the game more.”
《Battle Hymn》
――I saw you on stream playing some Japanese music and dancing. Do you understand the lyrics? Do you have any Japanese songs you like?
“I know only a few Japanese words I know from Japanese Anime. People watching my stream request songs, but a number of them are Japanese songs. I like Anime themed songs, J-POP and the kind in general. The Japanese musician I like most would be REOL!
《World at War》
Kanister chose to play Jund Sacrifice while the meta of the World Championship split into three major deck types. Not only that the deck matches his taste, he was seeing victory through using it, but …
