Today, we will draft with the new set: Dominaria!
I simulated the 8 first pick of a draft and asked to 4 Hareruya Pros Players what they would pick.
Here are the 4 gentlemen who accepted to participate in this experience:
You can see their profiles, more in details, here: Hareruya Pros
It will be interesting to see if they will do the same choices or not.
PICK 1
Luis Salvatto
Pick
I think is like a “trap” here, it is a good card, but paying 7 mana for a spell, means to win the game if we are ahead, or at least come back to the game if we are behind. I am happy about starting my draft with a really good colorless card: . Special mention to , usually a 4/4 costing 4 is good in draft, and depending on how fast/slow is the format, can be a good card also.
Christian Calcano
Pick
I think might be too slow for draft and while is good. I’d rather have a colorless card that is effectively a removal spell for their best creature every turn.
Yuta Takahashi
Pick
The second most powerful card in the set behind .The rare is also good but it has to be regarded as a multi-color, so generally, picking colorless first will make deck constructing more flexible.
Grzegorz Kowalski
Pick
I’m not sure how fast is this format, and how to evaluate cards, so I’ll just make a safe pick with removal.
Players’ Choice:
PICK 2
Luis Salvatto
Pick
I believe this is a weak pack. I pick the best card, a 2/2 first strike with an upside.
Christian Calcano
Pick
Two mana for a 2/2 first strike is a great rate, and its abilities are all upside so hard to go wrong with this pick I feel. seems ok, but it’s not a 2 drop in the sense that casting it on turn 2 will rarely get you the value that you want out of a card like this. seems pretty powerful to me, but not really looking to pick a gold card this highly unless I’m convinced BW is the way to go.
Yuta Takahashi
Pick
We must pick any good 2 drops as early as possible.
Grzegorz Kowalski
Pick
2/2 first strike for 2 is great. This one even has an upside.
Players’ Choice:
PICK 3
Luis Salvatto
Pick
Here I believe is the best card in the pack.
Christian Calcano
Pick
Nothing really exciting in this pack, so I would just take the . Looking at the top 3 taking 2 at instant speed seems solid. There’s definitly an argument for as that card seems like it could be quite good in combat, but that’s the type of card that I see going up in value as the format progresses depending on how the games play out.
Yuta Takahashi
Pick
It’s huge. No need to explain. is the second one in the pack, but you should pick creatures over spells in priority in early stage.
Grzegorz Kowalski
Pick
4/4 for 4 is usually great in limited, this gets better in the lategame.
Players’ Choice:
PICK 4
Luis Salvatto
Pick
Nothing exciting here, maybe Rona is good in lategame. The 2/2 stats are bad, but maybe if we end up in a UB control, is a good card for our deck.
Christian Calcano
Pick
I think the other black cards in this pack are playable, but Rona has the most upside for sure. We already have 1 Historic spell and this early in the draft we can look for more further down the road.
Yuta Takahashi
Pick
Can reuse even if it has been destroyed .If it’s your 4th pick, it allows you to go for “Historic” after.
Grzegorz Kowalski
Pick
Good uncommon in our colors. 3/3 trample for 3 is enough to make this card good, and I expect some green and red cards to have kicker.
Players’ Choice:
PICK 5
Luis Salvatto
Pick
I don’t think this card is good enough because it’s too expensive, but there is nothing too special beside and .
Christian Calcano
Pick
Not super thrilled about this pick to be honest. thought we don’t really want to take another here as I feel it gets worse in multiples. At the very least could outright win you a game depending on the matchup.
Yuta Takahashi
Pick
It’s a good creature who can stop most commons. seems a little too expensive.
Grzegorz Kowalski
Pick
Looks like a nice combat trick for one mana. I like that!
Players’ Choice:
PICK 6
Luis Salvatto
Pick
I like this land a lot. I think there is not too many double cost, and you can afford playing a colorless land in a 2 colors deck. Special mention to , maybe having 2-3 of this is a good way to play 8+ cc spells.
Christian Calcano
Pick
I know there are other Blue/Black cards in this pack, but I don’t think this card should ever be in a pack this late. Exile any creature at instant speed and it’s able to splash? Sign me up, I’ll be looking for a for sure.
Yuta Takahashi
Pick
I’d never expected that I was able to pick a good removal in such a middle of the draft! Started considering white essences into my green-based, multi-color deck.
Grzegorz Kowalski
Pick
Not sure how good this is, but set seems to be very artifact-oriented. In worst case we just get a decent sideboard card.
Players’ Choice:
PICK 7
Luis Salvatto
Pick
I like a lot of the tricks that untap creatures. +2/+2 also untapping for 2 mana is a good deal, with an upside paying 2 more.
Christian Calcano
Pick
, four mana for a 4/2 is just not a good enough rate in my opinion. however seems quite solid and now we’re positioned to be able to go UB or BW going forward.
Yuta Takahashi
Pick
Because my deck seems to be multi-color, I prefer to pick a fixer. Otherwise, my second choice would be .
Grzegorz Kowalski
Pick
Medium pump spell. We have one better already, but this might be worth playing if we get more kicker synergy later.
Players’ Choice:
PICK 8
Luis Salvatto
Pick
At this moment we don’t know what colors we will play, but we need 2 drops and this seems playable.
Christian Calcano
Pick
might end up being better, but you definitely need to draft a critical mass of Historic spells for it to be playable. At least the is good enough on its own.
Yuta Takahashi
Pick
Picking a card for our 2 drops. There was a pegasus in the pool and I regret not picking white.
Grzegorz Kowalski
Pick
The only card in our colors.
Players’ Choice:

Conclusion
It is pretty interesting how these 4 players are agree thatis too slow and is too good. Many non pro player would have jump on the rare. After this 8 picks, players are not really sure about the colors they wanna play. They stay open to at least 3 colors and start to pick fixers to be able to splash.
