Martin Muller’s Current Metagame Analysis

Martin Muller

Hey! My name is Martin Muller and today I will talk about how the Meta game has shifted from Pro Tour Kaladesh, through GP Warsaw, the MOCS and what to expect moving forward.

If you followed Pro Tour Kaladesh, in the beautiful Honolulu you probably saw a whole lot of Marvel Decks. The deck is inconsistent and very much a glass cannon. It had a very mediocre performance and didn’t seem as great a choice with the control decks picking up in popularity. So it quickly fell out of favor.

A deck that performed very well at the Pro Tour was Blue-White Flash because of its highly favored matchup against Marvel. The deck just plays a lot of really good cards, 《Spell Queller》, 《Gideon, Ally of Zendikar》, 《Archangel Avacyn》, 《Smuggler's Copter》 and so on is just premium cards and most were also perfect for the pro tour metagame.

Green/Black Delirium was also a big deck at the Pro Tour but didn’t perform very well because of It’s poor matchup against Marvel. But since Marvel has fallen in popularity Green/Black Delirium has positioned itself pretty clearly as the best deck in standard and the deck to beat. It has dominated the GP Top8s since the Pro Tour with an astonishing 6 copies of Green/Black Delirium in the Top8 of last week’s GP Warsaw.

Whenever there is a clear best deck in a format there are multiple ways to exploit it. The simplest and safest but also least rewarding way is just to play the best deck and tweak it to get an edge in the mirror. In some formats you can beat the best deck by going under it but in the case of Green/Black delirium it is a really tall order because of its strong defense.

But as the Pro Tour showed us it is possible to go over it, more specifically with Marvel. That is exactly why I think that Marvel could be a great choice moving forward. It is definitely a deck that’s only good when the format suits it but I do believe that could be the case right now. There you have it, my recommendation for your deck choice in Standard.
