Drafting War of the Spark with Pros #2

Jeremy Dezani

Today, we will draft with: War of the Spark

I simulate the 8 first pick of a draft and asked 4 Hareruya Pros Players what they would pick.

Here are the 4 gentlemen who accepted to participate in this experience:

For more details, please visit here: Hareruya Pros

It will be interesting to see if they will do the same choices or not.

Pick 1

Spark DoubleLiliana's TriumphKaya, Bane of the DeadHeartwarming RedemptionEnforcer GriffinSky Theater StrixThunder DrakeBanehoundDuskmantle OperativeShriekdiverVampire OpportunistAhn-Crop InvaderSpellgorger WeirdBand Together

Immanuel Gerschenson

Kaya, Bane of the Dead

The strongest card by far in this pack, while it also lets you stay open to be only in white or black (you don’t need to have both colors in your deck).

Grzegorz Kowalski

Kaya, Bane of the Dead

Easily the best uncommon in the set, so pick is not close for me. I like 《Spark Double》, but it’s not as good as 《Kaya, Bane of the Dead》. You can play her in almost every deck, and double exile effect makes a huge impact. If you combine her with Proliferate or cards like 《Teferi’s Time Twist》 or 《Rescuer Sphinx》, it gets even better.

Marc Tobiasch

Spark Double

Clones are always strong in Limited, and this being relatively slow as formats go with a lot of high powered threats makes this no exception.

Pascal Vieren

Kaya, Bane of the Dead

This pick is between 《Spark Double》 and 《Kaya, Bane of the Dead》. Both are excellent cards, but I’d take 《Kaya, Bane of the Dead》 here. She represents two removal spells and has even more upside with Proliferate or 《Aid the Fallen》. It’s also a hybrid card, so it’ll basically always make your deck.

Pick 2

Bond of InsightFlux ChannelerLeyline ProwlerCharmed StrayIronclad KrovodPouncing LynxCrush DissentLazotep ReaverBurning ProphetNahiri's StonebladesGiant GrowthPrismiteGateway Plaza

Immanuel Gerschenson

Lazotep Reaver

《Lazotep Reaver》 is not the strongest card in this booster, but I would like to cut a color to support 《Kaya, Bane of the Dead》 better, which is why I like taking him on color 2 drop here. Besides, there are not too many good 2 drops and this is one of the better ones.

Grzegorz Kowalski

Flux Channeler

After first picking 《Kaya, Bane of the Dead》, I’m happy to go with Proliferate. 《Flux Channeler》 is the best card in this pack and has synergy with our first pick, so another easy choice for me.

Marc Tobiasch

Leyline Prowler

The body is very good and this is a good start to a powerful multicolor deck. Staying in blue does not hold to much value here for me.

Pascal Vieren

Leyline Prowler

War of the Spark is grindy draft format with loads of very strong cards. The green decks are splashing basically all the strong cards you can get is strong archetype in this format. 《Kaya, Bane of the Dead》 is very nice, grindy card. 《Leyline Prowler》 is both fixer and an excellent creature, so that would be my pick.

Pick 3

Tibalt's RagerArlinn, Voice of the PackHeartwarming Redemptionテヨの光盾ShriekdiverToll of the InvasionVampire OpportunistHeartfireTurret OgreBand TogetherCentaur NurturerKraul Stinger

Immanuel Gerschenson

Toll of the Invasion

Once again not the strongest card, but on color and I actually like to maindeck this card in this Limited format, as your opponent has high impact cards in their deck is more likely with such a powerful set.

Grzegorz Kowalski

Centaur Nurturer

Nothing really to follow our two first picks, so at this point, I’m considering moving into 5 color green. Mana dork is a perfect card for this archetype, as it blocks well, gains us life, and gives any color of mana, which is super important for 5 color decks.

Marc Tobiasch

Centaur Nurturer

Take the fixing early and this is very good fixing.

Pascal Vieren

Arlinn, Voice of the Pack

I’m not sure what common was taken over 《Arlinn, Voice of the Pack》, but for me, She is an easy pick here. This pack also contains 《Band Together》 and 《Centaur Nurturer》, so green looks open.

Pick 4

Mayhem DevilGod-Pharaoh's StatueEnforcer GriffinGideon's SacrificeKiora's DambreakerNaga EternalKaya's GhostformRaging KronchTurret OgreGiant GrowthReturn to Nature

Immanuel Gerschenson

Kiora's Dambreaker

Taking 《Kiora’s Dambreaker》 here is fine, as I think that 《Kaya, Bane of the Dead》 is stronger in a control shell, and 《Kiora’s Dambreaker》 helps to get another activation out of 《Kaya, Bane of the Dead》, while also being a reasonable body.

Grzegorz Kowalski

Enforcer Griffin

Still not sure what I’m gonna draft, so will just pick the best card in the pack, that’s in color of our previous picks. We can fit 《Enforcer Griffin》 in GW Proliferate, 5C Green, and UW Fly, so doesn’t matter where we end up, we can play our 4th pick.

Marc Tobiasch

Giant Growth

Nothing here that I want in any color, 《Giant Growth》 is great rate and you never know how the deck will turn out.

Pascal Vieren

Enforcer Griffin

This pick is way less exciting. None of these cards is an important part of the decks I like in this format. I’d take 《Enforcer Griffin》 here, as it’s the most likely card to make my deck.

Pick 5

Sunblade AngelJiang Yanggu, WildcrafterMartyr for the CauseBanehoundSpark HarvestChainwhip CyclopsHonor the God-PharaohThundering CeratokVivien's GrizzlyWardscale Crocodile

Immanuel Gerschenson

Spark Harvest

Very good removal, a good sign that black is open in our seat at this point.

Grzegorz Kowalski

Vivien's Grizzly

Nothing strong for us, also 0 blue cards, which probably means we won’t be blue in this draft. Now I’m looking to make Green Ramp deck, and 《Vivien’s Grizzly》 is a great mana sink for the late game.

Marc Tobiasch

Jiang Yanggu, Wildcrafter

Another great fixing card and some decent value.

Pascal Vieren

Spark Harvest

My pick here is 《Spark Harvest》. It’s an all-around solid removal that can also take out opposing Planeswalkers. I’d expect to pay five mana for it most of the time, but having the other option is some nice flexibility.

Pick 6

NeoformBulwark GiantDefiant StrikeMartyr for the CauseContentious PlanNaga EternalDemolishCourage in CrisisGateway Plaza

Immanuel Gerschenson

Gateway Plaza

We still do not know what our second color will be, but taking the mana fixing here is fine, as there are many good multicolored black cards that you could potentially splash if you get them.

Grzegorz Kowalski

Gateway Plaza

Pack one works kinda medium for us, so I want to pick fixing and to be able to play all good cards from all colors I’ll be able to find in pack 2 and 3.

Marc Tobiasch

Gateway Plaza

We are well on our way to taking any bombs passed in later packs.

Pascal Vieren

Gateway Plaza

My pick here is 《Gateway Plaza》. I’m still looking to splash any strong cards I might see. Having access to 《Gateway Plaza》 makes the splashing way easier.

Pick 7

NeoformMartyr for the CauseCrush DissentKiora's DambreakerVraska's FinisherForced LandingVivien's GrizzlySaheeli's Silverwing

Immanuel Gerschenson

Saheeli's Silverwing

I do not want to take another 6 drops that early, which is why I am not taking 《Kiora’s Dambreaker》. 《Vraska’s Finisher》 is a fine 3 drop, but I think that 《Saheeli’s Silverwing》 fits the overall plan of the deck better so far.

Grzegorz Kowalski

Vivien's Grizzly

For the same reason as before. Great mana sinks in the late game.

Marc Tobiasch

Vivien's Grizzly

We are planning on playing a longer game, and this can provide early defense and late game value.

Pascal Vieren

Vivien's Grizzly

I’d take 《Vivien’s Grizzly》 here. While not the most exciting of cards, it can provide some late game card advantage and has a passable body in the early turns.

Pick 8

Pouncing LynxContentious PlanTeferi's Time TwistDavriel's ShadowfugueLazotep BehemothHeartfireReturn to Nature

Immanuel Gerschenson

Teferi's Time Twist

The very underrated card in my opinion. It lets you reset a Planeswalkers or protect a creature from removal, which is quite good in UB. There are also enough cards that have an enters the battlefield trigger in this color combination.

Grzegorz Kowalski

Teferi's Time Twist

This card is really underrated but works well in the set full of Planeswalkers. We can activate our 《Kaya, Bane of the Dead》 twice, make our opponent attack her, play 《Teferi’s Time Twist》 in opponent’s attack step, and rescue her with full loyalty ready to exile another to creatures. All of this just for two mana.

Marc Tobiasch

Contentious Plan

Draw a card and Proliferate is a way to create value in the right deck.

Pascal Vieren

Contentious Plan

I somewhat like 《Contentious Plan》 in this format. At it’s very worst, you can just cycle it, but the upside is quite high. I don’t mind playing 《Lazotep Behemoth》, but finding random big creatures isn’t really a problem in this format. My pick would be 《Contentious Plan》 to keep my options more open.

conclusion

The rarity of the card is an indication about the power of the card but the reality could be different. 《Kaya, Bane of the Dead》 is clearly a card with a rare power level but its an uncommon. This is why the first pick was close with a “real” rare: 《Spark Double》.
