The Last Sun 2014 Photo Essay

This year marks the second annual running of The Last Sun. As to be expected, many stories emerged from the tournament floor. This collection of photos hopes to capture the very feel the competition scene as well as draw forth some of the various little narratives that developed there.




The 172 player field gathered at the Hareruya Tournament Center
is a full thirty-six players larger than last year.








Shop owner Tomoharu Saito delivers the opening remarks,
“We hope to see some good games this year as always! Good luck! ”








The two Hareruya Pros team members in contention are called up immediately for a first round feature match, meanwhile [Hall of Famer Makihito] Mihara watches on during his first round bye.

The coverage team consults on which match to feature.








Tomoharu Saito and and Wataru Ito provide play-by-play coverage for the two-day event over NicoNico Live.Even mid-broadcast, at the sight of a camera, out come the peace signs.








Yuuki Ichikawa and [last year’s champion] Kentaro Yamamoto fight side by side, shoulder to shoulder.








Headed into the evening hours, the venue is still packed with spectators and people drafting in side events.








Attracting a lot of attention is the “Wary Sisters” [Norin Sisters] deck, but keeping track of the deck’s wild life swings is no easy task.You end up with a life pad that looks like this








It’s all fun and games between rounds when pro players get together for some free play and chit chat.








Is this a ramen shop staff photo? We were going for arms-crossed-in-the-wind, but maybe we should have gone with another Top 8 group shot. Nice to see Jace peeping out from the back, though.








In the elimination rounds players may examine each other’s lists,
but it’s a tall order to check over two whole decks in just three minutes.
