Drafting Modern Horizons with Pros #1

Jeremy Dezani

Introduction

Today, we will draft with : Modern Horizons.

I simulate the 8 first pick of a draft and asked to 4 Hareruya Pros Players what they would pick.

Here are the 4 gentlemen who accepted to participate in this experience:

Drafting Modern Horizons with Pros #1

It will be interesting to see if they will do the same choices or not.

Pick 1

Collected ConjuringExcludeGlacial RevelationSadistic ObsessionHeadless Specter
Igneous ElementalMagmatic SinkholeRank OfficerSoul-Strike TechniqueSpringbloom Druid
String of DisappearancesThornadoTrustworthy ScoutWindcaller AvenSnow-Covered Mountain

Arne Huschenbeth

Springbloom Druid

The three cards that stand out from this pack are 《Exclude》, 《Magmatic Sinkhole》 and 《Springbloom Druid》. 《Exclude》 is good, but not well supported as there is no real blue control archetype. 《Magmatic Sinkhole》 is a strong card, just a good bread and butter removal. I like the 《Springbloom Druid》 a lot, it enables many archetypes and I believe it to be the best green common in my early testing. 《Springbloom Druid》 is my pick.

Sebastian Pozzo

Magmatic Sinkhole

《Exclude》 is very good but I think the format is too tempo oriented and 《Magmatic Sinkhole》 is an excellent removal that can also allow us to play 2 spells in a turn to catch up, and that’s very important.

Petr Sochurek

Magmatic Sinkhole

Just a very efficient, cheap and splashable removal.

Kelvin Chew

Magmatic Sinkhole

This pack is quite weak. I think the choice is between 《Exclude》, 《Magmatic Sinkhole》 and 《Springbloom Druid》. I prefer removal.

Pick 2

Dregscape SliverOre-Scale GuardianTalisman of CuriosityChoking TethersFaerie Seer
Fountain of IchorMagmatic SinkholeMartyr's SoulMurasa BehemothReturn from Extinction
Scour All PossibilitiesSegovian AngelThornadoSnow-Covered Swamp

Arne Huschenbeth

Talisman of Curiosity

《Ore-Scale Guardian》, 《Talisman of Curiosity》 and 《Magmatic Sinkhole》 are the notable cards in pack 2. I like to stay open and take the Talisman.

Sebastian Pozzo

Magmatic Sinkhole

Here we have a second copy, the card obviously has diminishing returns because of Delve, but still I think I rather pick the second copy to move away from Red the player on our left. If not, the only other option I would consider is 《Faerie Seer》.

Petr Sochurek

Magmatic Sinkhole

Same as Pick 1.

Kelvin Chew

Ore-Scale Guardian

This was pretty good in the Red Green land archetype.

Pick 3

Astral DriftVengeful DevilChangeling OutcastDiabolic EdictEnduring Sliver
Impostor of the Sixth PrideMagmatic SinkholeMobOrcish HellraiserRain of Revelation
Rime TenderWindcaller AvenSnow-Covered Forest

Arne Huschenbeth

Mob

Lots of Red and White. The best Black common in form of 《Mob》 also in the pack. I like to draft BG, so I would just keep on passing the Red and take the 《Mob》 out of this pack. Hopefully, sending a clear signal to my left that they should be in Red. 《Astral Drift》 seems like a solid to good Blue-White Gold card to me. I like to be conservative and take the obviously good card over the potentially powerful card, I definitely could be wrong.

Sebastian Pozzo

Mob

A third copy of 《Magmatic Sinkhole》 would be too much, here I rather go with a different removal, BR is a combination I like. The other good possibilities are either both Red 2-drops and also 《Changeling Outcast》 (but it’s much better in UB).

Petr Sochurek

Magmatic Sinkhole

You don’t want to have too many, so I will try to pick cards that go well with it more highly now.

Kelvin Chew

Magmatic Sinkhole

Might be wrong to pick this over 《Mob》 but I want to try and pick all the Red cards.

Pick 4

Sisay, Weatherlight CaptainTempered SliverEnduring SliverEyekiteFountain of Ichor
Goblin War PartyImpostor of the Sixth PrideMind RakeMurasa BehemothSpore Frog
Windcaller AvenSnow-Covered Island

Arne Huschenbeth

Murasa Behemoth

This pack does not have any particular good card, just multiple solid rolefiller. I would just stay on track and take the 《Murasa Behemoth》. It’s more often than not a 8/8 trample for 6 and we already have two ramp spells.

Sebastian Pozzo

Eyekite

This pick is hard, the natural pick would be the 《Goblin War Party》, because it goes well with 《Mob》, it’s Red, etc. However, I found the card to be a little underwhelming by itself and the goblin payoffs are not very easy to pick. Also, 《Eyekite》 would be very good in a UR deck and there the Sinkholes would be much better.

Petr Sochurek

Windcaller Aven

I really like UR control and the Delve cards aren’t good in like a Boros aggro, but they go well with Cycling cards.

Kelvin Chew

Murasa Behemoth

A good finisher in the Red Green land archetype.

Pick 5

Goblin EngineerTalisman of CreativityElvish FuryFrostwallaHeadless Specter
Impostor of the Sixth PrideNimble MongooseSettle Beyond RealitySoul-Strike TechniqueWindcaller Aven
Snow-Covered Swamp

Arne Huschenbeth

Settle Beyond Reality

《Talisman of Creativity》 and 《Settle Beyond Reality》 are the best cards out of this pack. Easy Settle for me because it is easy to splash and good with any of the many Enter the Battlefield (ETB) creatures in Green.

Sebastian Pozzo

Windcaller Aven

The best card is 《Settle Beyond Reality》 by far, but I don’t like how White pairs with Red or Black, and we already have removals in those colours. 《Windcaller Aven》 isn’t great and often comes late, but it’s good in a UR aggro deck to enable the 2nd draw and as a potential finisher if we are flooding. Also fills the graveyard for Delve.

Petr Sochurek

Talisman of Creativity

Perfect card for UR control.

Kelvin Chew

Frostwalla

A good creature if you manage to pick up Snow-Covered lands.

Pick 6

Dismantling BlowLavabelly SliverFirst-Sphere GargantuaFists of FlameMind Rake
Rime TenderShelterTreefolk UmbraWinter's RestSnow-Covered Plains

Arne Huschenbeth

Rime Tender

This pick is between 《Rime Tender》 and 《First-Sphere Gargantua》. Gargantula is good, but we already have a Six drop and we are looking to be in Green more likely than to be in Black. Therefore, I take the 《Rime Tender》, you need around five Snow-Covered Basics to make it good.

Sebastian Pozzo

Fists of Flame

The card isn’t good by itself but I had very good results along with 《Spinehorn Minotaur》. I think it’s a key card if you draft UR aggresive deck.

Petr Sochurek

Winter's Rest

Don’t have any Snow-Covered land yet, but it’s the best card for me and it’s easy to get 《Snow-Covered Mountain》s late.

Kelvin Chew

Rime Tender

A 2 drop that can accelerate you if you have Snow-Covered land.

Pick 7

Dismantling BlowElvish FuryFaerie SeerMagmatic SinkholeRecruit the Worthy
Savage SwipeShenanigansSmoke ShroudSnow-Covered Mountain

Arne Huschenbeth

Magmatic Sinkhole

《Savage Swipe》 is solid, better the more aggressive you are and the more two power creatures you have. But I think just take the more powerful splashable card in the form of 《Magmatic Sinkhole》 over it.

Sebastian Pozzo

Faerie Seer

Here we see super late 《Faerie Seer》, 《Magmatic Sinkhole》 and 《Savage Swipe》. I would take the Faerie because now I’m locked in UR and the Faerie is very good to prevent flooding (sometimes too much cantip has that problem) and also potentially enable Ninjutsu. About 《Magmatic Sinkhole》 as I said, I rather stay away from 3rd copy, at least if I have other good options.

Petr Sochurek

Magmatic Sinkhole

Wow, so many sinkholes, I still think it’s the right pick.

Kelvin Chew

Savage Swipe

A cheap removal that works well with 2/2.

Pick 8

Frostwalk BastionBladeback SliverCave of TemptationNinja of the New MoonRank Officer
ShenanigansThornadoSnow-Covered Island

Arne Huschenbeth

Rank Officer

I like 《Rank Officer》 in GBx, I would take it over 《Thornado》 and 《Cave of Temptation》 even though it is close. The 《Ninja of the New Moon》 is more of an UB or BR card.

Sebastian Pozzo

Bladeback Sliver

There’s not much here and the Sliver isn’t the ideal 2 drop but it’s serviceable.

Petr Sochurek

Frostwalk Bastion

Really powerfull land.

Kelvin Chew

Bladeback Sliver

A fine 2 drop to have in your deck.

Conclusion

It is the beginning of the format and we can see this 4 gentlemen have different advice about what is the right thing to do here. It is good to see them picking the same card, but it is also very interesting when they disagree. I’m pretty sure they will check what the other three players did here too and learn from it. Which pro do you agree with?
